What’s under the hood of your dream electric vehicle? How about intuitive, energy-saving regenerative braking from Porsche that makes driving a dream. Learn everything you need to know about the new self-charging power of the Taycan and Macan EV models.

What Is Regenerative Braking?

This type of braking, also called regen braking, is a feature that’s linked to electric and hybrid cars. It takes the kinetic energy generated from your car’s momentum and converts it into power that recharges your hybrid or electric car’s battery. This is energy that would otherwise be lost with normal braking.

How Does It Work?

Electric motors work by either running forwards or backwards (technically clockwise or anti-clockwise). With non-electric cars, the motor is rotating in only one direction, so any energy generated by the brake pads and discs touching gets lost. With regen braking, this energy is converted into usable power for your car.

What Does Regen Braking Feel Like?

Every car with regen braking will feel a little different, and many electric cars have settings that allow you to tailor it to your own preference. It will feel like you are gently applying the brakes once you’ve taken your foot off the accelerator. It’s a feeling that quickly goes away, and many systems allow you to tailor how much resistance you feel from the brakes.

One-Pedal Systems

Vehicles with one-pedal driving systems allow the driver to bring the car to a complete stop without using the brake pedal. This feature makes it easier to drive without switching back and forth between pedals and helps extend your electric driving range.

What Are the Pros of Regen Braking?

There are plenty of advantages to regen braking, but the top three have to be the boost to the vehicle’s battery range, reduced wear and tear on braking components, and one-pedal systems that make driving easier and more relaxing.
